Steve Upshur Chambers Interview
Photo by Mike McGuiganFor those of you who prefer the fights at The Blue Horizon, you have come to know the Chambers brothers very well over the past few years. I recently had the opportunity to speak with Steve Upshur Chambers, the rising junior welterweight prospect who is fresh off of an exciting win over Lenny DiVictoria in December at the Blue which brought his record up to 14 – 1. “Showtime” Steve believes big things are in store for him and his brother in 2007 and he shares his thoughts and plans with the fight fans around the world in this exclusive.
Philly Keith Sports: So Steve, with your last win do you think you are ready to showcase your skills on TV?
Steve Chambers: Oh yeah, I feel very ready but really I have to sit down with my team, they will decide when I am ready for TV and where I am gonna fight at. I’ve been going along with whatever they put in front of me, whoever they bring me and I beat them.
PK: Can you give a little insight on where are you from, who does your team consist of?
SC: I’m from Pittsburgh, PA but been in Philly for about 4 years now. My team consists of me, my brother Eddie, Robert Murray Sr & Jr. my father and trainer Eddie Chambers Sr., Mr. Stabler who is our cut man and close friend.
PK: Do you have any amateur experience?
SC: 33 – 10 as an amateur over 4 years
PK: How would you describe your style for those who haven’t seen you?
SC: I’m a boxer but I tend to take the fight to them. If they aren’t willing to fight I am more than willing to take it to them. I like to fight fast paced and action packed. I fight in a smart way and give the fans their moneys worth .
PK: Been fighting out of Philly in the Blue Horizon, have there been any talks of you moving on?
SC: There have been talks, something about March but I’m not sure yet. I will probably fight a couple more times at the Blue Horizon then take it from there.
PK: What would you like to accomplish in 2007?
SC: I’d like to get in 6 fights, get to 20 wins. That is my personal goals but my team knows best, they have been around a lot longer than me. I want to get to that 20 win mark and set myself up for 2008 to where I can fight someone in the top 20 or top 10.
PK: Out of those guys in the top 20 or so at 140 lbs, who do you think is the best right now?
SC: That’s a hard question because everyone moves around in weight so much. Andre Berto is looking good.
PK: Is there anyone in that top 20 who you specifically want to fight?
SC: Chavez Jr. I would love to get a fight against him. I want to be the first to beat him. He is living off his dad’s name. I want to be the first, someone is gonna do it soon, I want it to be me.
PK: What does your training regimen consist of?
SC: Monday, Wednesday and Friday I get up around 8, we go through a track workout, then go to Villanova with the strength coach Jeff Watson and lift with him. After that go to the gym around 4 o’clock for Boxing work outs.
Thursday & Thursday do about a 6 mile run then back into the boxing gym.
PK: What does it mean to you to fight at the Blue which is known as one of the top venues in the world?
SC: It’s a special thing especially coming from Pittsburgh having everyone embrace us. I love fighting there.
PK: Let’s talk about your last fight against Lenny DiVictoria.
SC: It was a rematch, a close fight the first time.
PK: He was talking a lot right?
SC: Yeah but I didn’t pay much attention to him. I don’t think he had a problem with me personally; he was just trying to build himself up. That was a clean straight up Steve Chambers win.
PK: What do you think is in store for your brother Eddie’s future?
SC: I think he is going to get ranked real soon and win a title before the end of the year. I’m very excited for my brother!
PK: Anything else you want to add?
SC: Just to say thanks for the Philly fans to see me fight, enjoy my fights. Everyone out there, keep your eye out for the Chambers brothers because we are on our way. Its only gonna be a short matter of time!
Thanks for your time Steve!
