Don Elbaum interview

He is considered by many to be one of the best showman in the business. A guy with a trick up his sleeve to make things more interesting and will throw you a curveball just when you think you know what to expect. Ladies and gentleman, I give to you Don Elbaum, matchmaker for the Legendary Blue Horizon and advisor to some of the hottest prospects in the game. His last card at the Blue in February was absolutely lights out and he promises the next card on April 6th will top that. Those are some strong statements and he will have to pull one out of backside to accomplish that but if there is one thing I have learned during my time in this business, it is don't ever sleep on "The Don". I caught up with The Don after the press conference for the Blue Horizon's next show to talk about the upcoming card and touch on the future of Harry Yorgey and Eddie Chambers.

Philly Keith: Don, thanks for giving a few minutes of your time. Tell us a little bit about Friday’s card at the Blue.

Don Elbaum: Our last card was an outstanding card 2 months ago. It’s an exciting card right now and this one could be even better. We have 6 fights scheduled with Aaron Lyons possibly being a 7th. Lyons is the fighter who scored a stunning upset over the previously undefeated Joey Abell. We have Slick Simon O’Donnell from Ireland who is one of the best prospects in the country and in my opinion will be knocking on the door of a world champion in 2 years. He is getting his most difficult test to date against Joe Christy who awkward, comes to fight, mauls, pushes, hits low, bites, steps on your toes and does everything. It is going to be interesting but Simon is telling me he will knock him out. We have Elad Schmouel, the kosher Pitbull who is non stop action and a member of the Israeli national Army taking on Jason Jordan who is one tough, smart fighter with over 100 amateur fights. We have a fight dubbed “what can Brown do for you” with Mark “Oaktree” Brown taking on Sam Brown who served two tours in Iraq and is going back in September. Everyone is telling me who is gonna win that fight but I am gonna tell you who will lose, it’s gonna be Brown Chucky Cavallo fights Mike Word who just scored an incredible 2nd round knockout over the tough Marty Lindquist. We hope to set up a Cavallo – Alexander fight in the near future.

PK: What about the main events?

DE: It’s just gonna be a wild one, in co-feature is undefeated light heavyweight Max Alexander who takes on Demetrius Jenkins. In this fight, they are talking about how long Demetrius Jenkins has been off but he is in great shape and has never given anyone an easy night. The main event is an 8 rounder with Chazz Witherspoon taking on Charles Davis who 3 weeks ago was going to fight Chazz. They wanted me to get someone else but it boiled down to this is who you are fighting. It is gonna be interesting because Charles is slick, a survivor who makes you miss. He is experienced and is going to be a great great test for Chazz.

Those are the main events but watch out for the Kosher Pit Bull, Elad Schmouel who has been turning this place upside down is back in action.

PK: What are you thought on Elad’s last fight, an all out war with Ryan Belasco?

DE: Aw man, well he got dropped and scared the hell out of me, but he got up and won the 2nd, 3rd and 4th round and just eeked out a decision. Belasco wants to fight him against but we will save that for an 8 rounder down the line. Overall it’s gonna be a great one, a traditional Blue Horizon Fight Night.

PK: You mentioned at the press conference the possibility of a Max Alexander – Chucky Cavallo Light Heavyweight showdown. It is a fight many people, myself probably being the loudest have been wanting for some time.

DE: I think that’s gonna be a classic Philadelphia fight. I am not sure exactly when but I think it is a fight that belongs on TV. That fight is what Philadelphia is all about, hopefully they will both still be undefeated when it happens. I see that fight taking place in the fall.

PK: So you told us about the great things coming up at the Blue, let’s talk about a guy who helped get the Blue to this point, Eddie Chambers. What’s Fast Eddie got going on?

DE: It is looking like Dominick Guinn on May 4th in Vegas, the night before Mayweather – De La Hoya. We are checking his eye out, it wasn;t 100% as of a week ago but we are confident he will be ok.

PK: Another guy who is under your watchful eye, Harry Yorgey

DE: Wasn’t he sensational the other night!!!! Aw my God! We are looking for Mike Stewart now. There was a problem on their end of the discussion with the weights so I came back with the best deal, make it at 150 lbs give or take 5 lbs. we are talking about it and it could be done. That is another TV fight.

PK: Thanks a lot Don, see you at the Blue on Friday!

DE: Great stuff you guys have on the site phillykeith.com !

A lot of character in that face! Legenary Don Elbaum. Good interview. He could sell air conditioners in Alaska. Yorgey-Stewart and Alexander-Cavallo. Good to hear a local promoter trying to put on good matches like this. He and Peltz are top's for putting good fights on for the fan's.
